Sokē was created to celebrate culture, connection, and the stories that bring people together. Celebrating culture means standing behind it. Together with Stop AAPI Hate, we are amplifying voices, challenging hate, and supporting AAPI communities across the country. This is not a moment—it’s a movement.
Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are too often underrepresented and overlooked. Storytelling can help change that. When stories of cultural pride, heritage, and lived experience are shared, they create understanding and make space for communities to be seen and heard.
Sunayana, Indian American
In 2014, my husband Srinu and I moved to Kansas with the hope of making it our forever home. Three years later, my whole world changed when he was shot and killed by a white supremacist at a local restaurant, where he and his best friend were getting after-work drinks.
I was devastated to lose my best friend and life partner. After his death, I knew I had to do something to honor his memory. So, I established the Forever Welcome Foundation to stand against hate and to help build communities where everyone is treated with humanity and kindness, and where people have the opportunity to belong and thrive.
Sally, Chinese American
For over five years, I was an organizer and advocate for affirmative action in a case that went to the Supreme Court in 2023. I can list all the reasons why race-conscious policies like affirmative action are important.
But when I think about why I got involved as a student years ago, the reasons are much more personal. I chose to be in solidarity with other students of color and take pride in my Asian American identity, to ultimately take a stand against the white supremacists trying to divide us.
Norman, Chinese American
In 1898, my ancestor Wong Kim Ark fought for birthright citizenship and won. For most of my life, I didn’t know I was related to him — but my family history is resurfacing with Trump’s attacks.
Birthright citizenship has changed the way America looks and is. And Trump’s executive order threatens to uproot the lives of millions of people, leaving them stateless.
That's why, after learning about my family history, I decided to take up the mantle that my ancestors left behind -joining activists all over the country in the fight to protect our right to call America home.
Kenny, Vietnamese American
Growing up, I remember life being so chaotic. My family left Vietnam as refugees and settled in Massachusetts. After arriving, my parents had to navigate life as new parents in a new country.
But my Ong Noi — my grandfather — was always my safe space. He would tell me stories about the war and what he went through. The fear he had for his children as they escaped Vietnam as refugees. The troubles they had when they arrived in the United States.
He also taught me that love is a great form of resistance. Love in the face of war, trauma, and conflict is how we can rise above and create the world in which we want to see.
